During the development of the BioLEd curriculum, we assessed student performance on pre-lab quizzes, assignments, and the final exam. Comparing performance on the pre-lab quizzes to that on the final exam, we found that the assignment (based on the laboratory) improved student learning, as shown in the first data chart below.

We also found — based on the the final manuscript summarizing their research in the second semester — that students generally struggled most with data analysis and troubleshooting experimental design.  This is shown in the chart below, and has prompted us to develop instructional methods to better teach students in these areas.
